'Yes please': Andy Robertson delighted as £30m former Liverpool teammate joins league champions

Former Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has finally found himself a new club after sealing a move to Scottish champions Celtic on Saturday.

The 32-year-old had been without a team since the summer after being released following a two-year spell with Besiktas.

There have been suggestions that Mikel Arteta wants Oxlade-Chamberlain as a coach at Arsenal, and perhaps the former Liverpool man was beginning to feel his playing days might be over.

But in swooped Celtic to give him a six-month lifeline and give him a way back into top-level football.

As an avid Celtic fan, Andy Robertson is always keeping a close eye on goings on at Parkhead, and the Liverpool vice-captain reacted with glee at seeing his old colleague tie up a move north of the border.

A bubbly and likeable character, it has been a shame to see Oxlade-Chamberlain fall out of the football world’s consciousness since leaving Liverpool in 2023.

In reality he had been an afterthought under Jurgen Klopp at Anfield for 18 months before he’d left, but he could still offer plenty to Celtic.

Robertson certainly seems to think so as he took to his Instagram stories on Saturday to big-up his teammate of six years.

“Awww yes please!!” the Scotsman enthused. “Good luck my boy.”

It remains to be seen how Oxlade-Chamberlain’s fitness holds up after six months out of the game, but if he can display some of the power, drive and versatility he’s known for in Glasgow, then hopefully he can either extend his contract or get a good move this summer.

Could Robertson join Celtic this summer?

Oxlade-Chamberlain does reportedly have an option to extend his contract at Celtic if he performs well enough in what’s left of this season.

If he can do that, there is a possibility he could be joined by Robertson once his Liverpool contract expires this summer.

The left-back was seemingly on the verge of a move to Tottenham in January, and clearly believes he can still play at a higher level than the Scottish Premiership.

He is also likely to have plenty of offers from across Europe this summer if he is available on a free transfer.

However, a move to Celtic has always been one of Robertson’s career ambitions, and as he approaches his 32nd birthday, maybe he’ll feel it might be time to return home. Should he still be there, maybe Oxlade-Chamberlain can convince him of that.
