Tottenham could face stiff competition from Newcastle United and Aston Villa for the signing of a Premier League midfielder in the summer.
Tottenham Hotspur’s Premier League struggles have been evident for all to see this season. The north London outfit have yet to find any real momentum in the competition, winning just two of their last 15 league matches.
The Lewis Family had the chance to strengthen the squad over the January transfer window. With the injury list growing every week, adding just two players to Thomas Frank’s squad was simply not enough. This is why plenty of fans were livid that there were no further signings after Conor Gallagher and Souza’s arrivals.
Gallagher was the only marquee winter acquisition, signed from Atletico Madrid in the wake of Rodrigo Bentancur’s serious hamstring injury. The England international has brought bite and energy to Tottenham’s midfield that has been so easily bypassed multiple times by opponents this season.
However, Gallagher will not solve all the team’s problems in midfield. When it comes to dictating the pace of the game, the current crop of midfielders struggled to perform that job. This has highlighted the requirement of a No.6 and 8 hybrid, and Spurs seemingly had a Liverpool player on their radar.
Newcastle United enter race for Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones
Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones was among several winter targets for Spurs. Rated extremely highly in the Premier League, the €40m-rated 25-year-old has come through the Liverpool academy and caught the attention of several clubs with his distribution, reading of the game and defensive ability.
Apart from Tottenham, the Englishman was wanted by Inter Milan. The Serie A side reportedly held talks with Liverpool over a potential loan move for Curtis Jones, with an option to make the move permanent in the summer. A move did not happen, though, with Arne Slot deciding to retain the midfielder’s services to keep his squad depth intact. But come summer, things could change.
According to a report from TEAMtalk, Newcastle United have been keeping tabs on Curtis Jones’ situation at Liverpool. They view him as a potential replacement for Sandro Tonali, who was linked with a move to Arsenal on transfer deadline day. Aston Villa have previously shown an interest in the Reds’ academy star.
Jones has been a regular member of Arne Slot’s squad since the summer of 2024. He is yet to become a first-team regular, and with the Englishman seeking more involvement from the start under Slot as he enters the prime stages of his career, Premier League troika Spurs, Newcastle and Aston Villa could pounce on the midfielder in the summer when he will have just one year left on his contract.
For Tottenham, signing Jones should be an obvious decision. He is 25, Premier League proven and clearly has his best years ahead of him and, if utilised correctly, could address a key area of the pitch under Frank. The Liverpool star fits the profile of a hybrid No.6/8 and would represent a clear upgrade on Yves Bissouma, who is out of contract in the summer.
As Newcastle and Villa could knock on Liverpool’s door in the summer if, by then, Jones’ future is not resolved, Spurs must start working on a potential deal behind the scenes.
