Aston Villa are eyeing a 'shock' move to sign Liverpool star Curtis Jones this summer, according to TEAMtalk.
The Villans have had a tremendous campaign so far this season, and currently sit third in the Premier League table, nine points behind league leaders Arsenal following their 1-1 draw with Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.
Unai Emery oversaw a busy winter transfer window as the club brought in Tammy Abraham, Douglas Luiz, and recalled Leon Bailey, while Donyell Malen and Evann Guessand were allowed to depart. But Villa are already looking ahead to the summer window now, and a new central midfielder is being targeted.
Aston Villa Eyeing Curtis Jones Move
Curtis Jones
Jones, who has been described as 'complete', has been a key member of the Liverpool squad in recent seasons, but is out of contract at Anfield in 2027, and there has been speculation that he could be allowed to move on in the summer.
Journalist David Lynch reported that it would be a 'surprise' if the England international was to renew his contract at this stage, and Jones also agreed to leave for Inter Milan in January before a deal collapsed as Liverpool didn't want to lose him so late in the window.
But Villa are now considering a 'shock' swoop to bring him to Villa Park as they look to strengthen their midfield options in the summer, with Jones seen as a ready-made option to come in and improve the team, while also adding experience and quality to the squad.
Villa's ambitious project has seen them target players with Premier League pedigree and homegrown status in recent windows, and Jones fits the bill. However, it's unclear if Liverpool would be willing to sanction a deal, and there is still time for the club to open talks with their academy starlet over fresh terms to extend his stay at his boyhood club.
Jones Would Be Perfect Aston Villa Signing
Curtis Jones
Villa's greatest strength under Emery has been the quality they have in midfield, with physical players who have excellent technical quality too. Adding a player like Jones to a squad that already contains the likes of Amadou Onana, Boubacar Kamara, John McGinn and Youri Tielemans would be brilliant, and make the team that much stronger.
Aston Villa look set to qualify for the Champions League next season too, based on recent results and their current league standing, and that could make them a very appealing destination to players such as Jones.
With a year remaining on his deal by the time the window comes around, any deal is likely to be excellent value for money too, and that is where Villa thrive in the market.
