Wolves Lessons from Chelsea: New Signings Impress, But Mistakes Still Decide Games

ANDREW BENNETT TAKES A LOOK AT THE LESSONS WOLVES FAIL TO LEARN

Not much is learnt week on week when the same failings show themselves, concede a goal, totally drop off and make Sunday league errors to make it impossible to get any result even after a positive second half performance.

What about the new signings?

Angel Gomes looks to have a great pass in his locker displaying great balls out to Bueno and Arokodare in the opening minutes of the first half when Wolves looked competitive until conceding the opening goal. Defensively running back there will be some questions about his pace but on the ball and in the tackle the England international looks like a welcome addition offering something different to the midfield of Joao Gomes and Andre. Looked to grow into the game during the second half a positive found in a poor afternoon.

Adam Armstrong was quiet in the first half, but this is to be expected when the home side is conceding first half hat-tricks. Clearly comes to Wolverhampton with a positive mindset and did try to move the ball up the pitch in limited phases of play.

In the second half Armstrong showed his attacking intent to flick on at the near post for Tolu’s goal. Armstrong put in a good shift throughout the game stretching Chelsea defenders allowing Tolu to receive more of the ball in space.

Trying new things brings the same results

Rob Edwards made changes in this afternoons game pivoting to a 4-2-3-1 for 10 minutes his changes looked positive as Wolves had much of the ball and took the game to Chelsea.

This additionally did lead to an opening 10 minutes of Tolu Arokodare looking more dangerous when Wolves were able to get players closer to him. With Tolu getting on the scoresheet causing danger in the box.

Unfortunately when defenders continue to make errors the formation doesn’t matter the same results happen. The heads dropping after conceding an opening goal is something which really needs to be changed and quickly as Wolves already prepare for life in the Championship.

The formation change was scrapped after Chelsea had made it 3-0 and Hwang was withdrawn with an injury to be replaced by Krejci, and a return to a back 5. The back 5 looked far better during the second half providing a better team shape and cover for defenders who too regularly make calamitous errors.

Time is up for Hwang

Maybe nothing new as once again the South Korean put in a stinker of a performance absolutely inept first touch, just an utter lack of anything to help the side. If Hwang’s injury does keep him out for the midweek trip to Nottingham Forest it could (should) be the last time he starts as Wolves looked far better offensively when he was off the pitch.
