There is a buy-back clause inserted into the deal that saw the defender depart the club last summer.

Jarell Quansah departed Liverpool on a permanent deal to Bayer Leverkusen last summer after seeing his route to regular playing time at the club blocked by the dominance of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.

This season, he has enjoyed a successful start to life in Germany.

The English defender has featured 28 times in all competitions for the Bundesliga side, becoming a mainstay in the heart of their defence.

Jarell Quansah was never a favour during Arne Slot’s debut season in charge.

The first indicator of this was the very first game of the Premier League season.

Quansah started the game away at Ipswich Town but was hooked at half-time after a shaky opening 45 mins.

A significant setback for the young man, and one that potentially started the mindset shift that his football would be best suited elsewhere.

The former Liverpool player has now shown that he has what it takes to regularly put in good performances for a top team when given the chance and it is further proof that the potential that many saw at the beginning of his Liverpool career could make him one of the best defenders in Europe one day.

This is something that Liverpool will keep an eye on, especially with the possibility of bringing the defender back to the club.

The Sunday Times have revealed that the Reds will get priority on this as there is a unique buy-back clause inserted into the deal, which means that the contract and fee to return him to Anfield has already been agreed.

It is thought that this can be actioned from 2027 should the player and the club want such a move.

The future of Liverpool’s backline is a bit up in the air right now.

Liverpool secured the signing of Jeremy Jacquet for the 2026/27 season, and with Giovanni Leoni returning from his ACL injury in the summer they have two top-class young defenders in their ranks.

However, Ibrahima Konate’s Liverpool future remains unclear and Virgil van Dijk is moving into his mid-thirties and only has so much time left.

The possibility of a Jarell Quansah return will be a welcomed option for Liverpool should they wish to strengthen even further in the future.
