Liverpool given 'quite serious' injury update for Jeremy Jacquet just days after passing medical

It seems Liverpool’s woeful injury luck isn’t just coming into play at Anfield, with new signing Jeremy Jacquet the latest casualty.

We just can’t catch a break with defenders this season.

Liverpool reached an agreement for Jacquet to join in the summer, allowing him to finish out the season at Rennes before making his big move.

The year is 2030, how much is Liverpool centre-back Jeremy Jacquet worth!? 💰

Unfortunately, he might not get to help his team in the coming weeks after what his manager has said following a shoulder injury this weekend.

Rennes manager Habib Beye shares concerning Jeremy Jacquet update

Rennes fell to a 3-1 defeat against Ligue 1 leaders Lens on Saturday, with Jacquet forced off in the 69th minute.

He picked up a shoulder injury just days after completing his medical at Anfield, and it sounds like it could be one that keeps him out for significant time.

After the game, Beye gave his view in a post-match interview reported on by ESPN.

He said: “For Jeremy, it’s his shoulder, and for Abdelhamid [Ait Boudlal, the other Rennes player injured] it’s muscular.

“We’ll have time to see, but it’s definitely quite serious for both of them.”

Liverpool may not be directly impacted by this news, but it’s just another problem they have to deal with.

Jacquet suffers from a muscular disease that Steve Gerrard also dealt with as a Liverpool player, and to see the young Frenchman injured so soon after signing doesn’t inspire confidence.

Hopefully, Beye is taking a more cautious view on the assessment, and Jacquet can return to action quickly.

Another reason why Liverpool aren’t quite there with defensive recruitment

This Jacquet scare only serves to reinforce the idea that more work needs to be done to give Liverpool the kind of depth that allows for competing — and succeeding — on all fronts.

Giovanni Leoni’s arrival was completely negated by his early season-ending injury. It just goes to show, you need enough cover to manage multiple injuries, in every position.

Liverpool are working on extending Ibrahima Konate, but if he was to go in the summer, another centre-back should be one of Slot’s non-negotiables for the next transfer window.

Where does Ibrahima Konate rank in Liverpool’s greatest Premier League centre-backs?

While Jacquet and Leoni are exciting prospects, these injuries are evidence that they can’t be relied on to replace a player like Konate in his prime — not on their own, anyway.
