Mohamed Salah is poised to be presented with the opportunity to become the Saudi Pro League’s next marquee figure this summer.

Saudi officials are keen for the Egyptian star to step into the spotlight as Cristiano Ronaldo weighs up his future. The Portuguese forward is reportedly considering leaving his $4.5 million-a-week Al-Nassr deal after growing frustrated with the Saudi Pro League’s handling of transfers.

Ronaldo was particularly unhappy when former Real Madrid team-mate Karim Benzema was allowed to move from Al-Ittihad to Al-Hilal last week and the Portuguese was subsequently absent from Monday’s fixture against Al-Riyadh. Reports indicate the former Manchester United and Juventus striker is now targeting a return to Europe in pursuit of his long-held ambition of reaching the 1,000-goal mark.

If the 41-year-old departs, Salah is reportedly among the candidates Saudi Pro League officials are considering to succeed him, alongside United’s Bruno Fernandes. The Egyptian could potentially triple his $545,000-a-week Liverpool salary, if he accepts an offer that would bring his nine-year spell at Anfield to an end.

However, Salah’s recent clash with Liverpool head coach Arne Slot — culminating in the forward being dropped after publicly criticising his treatment —has sparked speculation that he could seek a new challenge at the end of the season.

The prospect of lowering Salah’s hefty wage bill could appeal to Liverpool’s hierarchy, who would also stand to gain a substantial transfer fee if Saudi interest solidifies in the coming months. The club would ideally want any deal concluded before Salah departs for the World Cup with Egypt.

Salah attracted a massive bid from Al-Ittihad in 2023, which Liverpool turned down, but a new offer is anticipated this summer, and the player may be more open to the move now.

Salah, who turns 34 in June, has featured in Liverpool’s last four matches since returning from Egypt’s semi-final exit to Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations.

He is expected to play in Sunday’s crucial league clash with Manchester City, though he has struggled to regain his best form, scoring just six goals across all competitions and netting only four times in the Premier League as the defending champions falter in its title defence.

Liverpool.com says: Tripling his Liverpool wages is a huge incentive for Salah, and the chance to become a marquee figure in an emerging league would reflect a growing trend of top players seeking new challenges outside Europe towards the end of their career.

With 12 months left on his contract in the summer and Salah struggling this season, Liverpool may be tempted to cash in rather than risk losing another high-profile player for free. While his dip in form makes the decision easier, Reds fans will be upset to see a Liverpool legend move on.
