Barcelona presidential candidate ready to sack Deco as sporting director

The Barcelona presidential election is just around the corner and it is going to be a key one, as Joan Laporta potentially failing to win may significantly alter the direction the club are heading towards.

Laporta’s biggest adversary is Victor Font, who has received support from Xavi Hernandez and has a better relationship with Lionel Messi.

If Font wins the election, he is ready to take some drastic steps, which may include the decision to sack one of Barcelona’s most important executives.

Font ready to sack Deco

In a recent interview with RAC 1 (h/t MARCA), Font has admitted that he would sack Deco as the sporting director if he wins the election.

“Deco will not be my sporting director. We will assemble the structure that best fits Hansi Flick,” he said.

This hardly comes as any surprise as Font has been very critical of Deco in the past, particularly surrounding the decision to bring in Vitor Roque.

Although the Roque deal didn’t work out for Barcelona, the club may be able to recoup the investment they had made, as they retain 20% of the sell-on fee while the player himself is doing extremely well in Brazil, which may lead to a ticket back to Europe.

Nevertheless, Font is not fond of Deco, although when asked who he would replace him with, he didn’t opt to reveal the name.

“We will not give the name, we cannot announce it because he has a contract. There will be no people who have nothing to do with the sporting structure,” he said.

Font’s comment suggests he has already earmarked someone within Barcelona to become the replacement for Deco.

It also implies the presidential candidate has been in talks with this particular person, who might be internally supporting him as well.

Font’s arrival, though, might not be appreciated by not only Deco but Hansi Flick as well, with reports suggesting that he may quit if Laporta fails to win this election.
