Gary Neville has dismissed Mohamed Salah’s shout for a penalty during the first half of Liverpool’s clash with Manchester City.

The Egyptian was denied the chance to give the Reds the lead from the spot, despite seemingly being pulled back by Bernardo Silva from a set-piece. Craig Pawson waved away the initial shouts from Liverpool, although the incident was reviewd by VAR.

After a short check, Pawson’s on-field decision was confirmed, with former Manchester United captain Neville agreeing while commentating on the game for Sky Sports - although he did suggest that Salah might have had his City counterpart more than a little worried.

“I don’t think there’s enough in it, I think there’s a little bit of a panic from Bernardo Silva because he thinks ‘oh no, he’s going to score’,” Neville said.

“But I think he lets go in time, and he just feels that hand on his shoulder doesn’t he, the Egyptian, and goes down.

“I don’t think it’s enough. Yeah, he’s not going to get that.”

A goalless first-half saw City have the better of the chances, with Erling Haaland being denied early on by Alisson Becker.

Marc Guehi made his first visit to Anfield since completing his January move to City, having come so close to joining Liverpool in the summer. The defender was greeted by loud boos from the home supporters, having had the plug on his move to Merseyside pulled by Crystal Palace back in September.

Both sides have plenty to play for, with Liverpool starting the day five points off the top four in the Premier League, while City were nine points off leaders Arsenal ahead of kick-off.

“We know also that we have a responsibility to our supporters to do everything that we possibly can to deliver for them.

“This is one of the reasons why I was much happier after our last two home matches, as it was clear that not only were our results better, so were our performances.

“This is what we are striving for. It is not easy in a league as competitive and as intense as this one but it is our objective and one that we work towards on a daily basis."
