Match winner: Erling Haaland
Manchester City piled the pressure back on Arsenal in the Premier League title race with a last-minute 2-1 victory at Anfield.
Dominik Szoboszlai’s free-kick opened the scoring in spectacular style, but Bernardo Silva notched a late equaliser to set up a grand-stand finale.
Alisson then felled Matheus Nunes in stoppage time, with City awarded a penalty, and Erling Haaland stepped up when it mattered.
Rayan Cherki thought he had scored from distance with the last kick of the game, as Alisson joined his team-mates in a desperate attempt to find an equaliser for the hosts. The French substitute rolled into the open net as he and Haaland streaked clear.
VAR ruled the goal out as Szoboszlai and Haaland were adjudged to have fouled each other in pursuit of the ball, and the Liverpool midfielder was sent off, with his initial foul on the City striker deemed a denial of a clear goalscoring opportunity.
The victory for City keeps the gap at the summit to six points, although Pep Guardiola’s side could close that to three by Wednesday evening, when they face Fulham.
