Liverpool suffered a 2-1 loss against Manchester City at Anfield.
Arne Slot has given his reaction to Dominik Szoboszlai’s red card in Liverpool’s loss to Manchester City.
The Reds threw away the lead to suffer a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Pep Guardiola’s side at Anfield. Szoboszlai’s 74th-minute free-kick deservedly gave the home side the lead but they could not hold on. Bernardo Silva equalised for City with six minutes remaining and then an Erling Haaland penalty in the third minute of stoppage-time flipped the game on its head.
Then in the 103rd minute, with Liverpool’s goal unguarded, Rayan Cherki thought he’d put the gloss on City’s win. But that goal was disallowed following a VAR review as Szoboszlai was adjudged to have pulled back Haaland, who was in pursuit of the ball. Szoboszlai was given a red card for committing a professional foul - meaning he will be banned for Wednesday’s trip to Sunderland.
It leaves the Reds short of another right-back, with Jeremie Frimpong (groin) and Conor Bradley (knee) both injured while Joe Gomez (hip) missed a third successive game against City.
On the red card, Liverpool head coach Slot said: “That is not the incident we should talk about. Maybe he should have left it for a goal as it is, but if that is the rule that is what we have to accept.”
Instead, Slot felt that City should have been reduced to 10 men when the game was goalless. Mo Salah was dragged back by Guehi just outside of the box. Slot added: “If there is any incident we should talk about, it's when Mo Salah is one on one with the goalkeeper. Anyone who has been to this stadium in the last seven or eight years, that is a goal for Salah. Once again, the referee decides not in our favour. They have to do their job.”
City boss Pep Guardiola reckons that the goal should have been allowed to stand, which would have kept Szoboszlai on the pitch and be available for Sunderland. The Etihad Stadium chief said: “Common sense, no? I know him pull him but how many pulls are there in this country? Give the goal, 3-1.”
