86th-minute moment vs Man City shows FSG have cost Liverpool dearly - opinion

Liverpool failed to keep hold of their 1-0 lead and eventually lost to Manchester City, with Dominik Szoboszlai being sent off.

The Reds went into the game knowing they needed all three points to keep their Champions League hopes alive.

Milos Kerkez was among those to impress in the early stages, with Liverpool looking much improved for large periods.

Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz should have done better with some key chances before Dominik Szoboszlai stepped up to make it 1-0 via a stunning free-kick.

However, Liverpool were not able to hold onto their lead and eventually lost 2-1.

FSG cost Liverpool vs Manchester City

Erling Haaland did well to set up Bernardo Silva for City’s equaliser in the 84th minute.

Alisson then made a silly challenge to give away a penalty and allow the Norwegian to make it 2-1 and secure the win.

Fans may well be quick to blame the Brazilian for the loss, which is fair given it was such a bad challenge to make.

However, FSG need some stick for the result as well, as the goalkeeper probably wouldn’t have been in that situation if not for Marc Guehi.

In the 86th minute, with the score at 1-1, Liverpool were breaking, and Mohamed Salah was completely free on the right.

Had the pass got to the Egyptian, he may well have gone on to score his one-on-one.

However, the ball to Salah was blocked by a brilliant last-ditch tackle by none other than Marc Guehi.

Guehi was a transfer target of the Reds in the summer, but Liverpool decided against signing the centre-back in January.

It was reported after his move to City that the Reds did not feel his wage demands represented ‘a smart market opportunity’, whatever that means.

Well, thanks to FSG being unwilling to pay up, Guehi is now a City player and had a great game on Sunday.

Even before the Englishman blocked that pass to stop Salah getting through, he made a key block to deny a Wirtz effort earlier in the game.

A truly frustrating watch for fans, who will know the result could have been very different if FSG had just signed Guehi, who preferred Liverpool to the Sky Blues.
