Dominik Szoboszlai has been branded ‘daft’ for making a ‘stupid decision’ in Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.

The Hungarian had a very eventful game at Anfield as he opened the scoring in stunning fashion with a beautiful free-kick on 74 minutes.

It looked like he may have scored a brilliant winner, but City turned things around late on through Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland.

Silva nipped in behind to poke home a Haaland header, then the Norwegian scored from the penalty spot after Alisson Becker brought down Matheus Nunes.

It looked like there had been a third goal for the visitors even deeper into stoppage time, but it was chalked off in bizarre circumstances.

Goalkeeper Alisson Becker went up for a corner and stayed up even as the game returned to open play, allowing City to break and Rayan Cherki to score from the halfway line.

As the ball rolled towards the goal, Szoboszlai raced after it with Haaland and tugged the Norwegian back, before the City man then hauled down the Hungarian.

After a VAR review, the goal was chalked off and Szoboszlai sent off, as advantage was given for his foul and then cancelled out for the foul on him.

It was a very strange situation, but Jamie Carragher feels Szoboszlai should not have got physical with Haaland, as he was not able to stop the goal and now faces a ban.

‘It’s a stupid decision by Szoboszlai,’ the Liverpool legend said on Sky Sports. ‘For me you just let it carry on and the goal goes in and I don’t think anyone’s complaining.

‘It’s absolutely daft from him because he’s got time to think, he was running back.’

Sky Sports report that it is likely to just be a one-match ban for the Hungary international, meaning he will miss the trip to Sunderland on Wednesday night.

Haaland admitted he felt bad for his opponent, although wrongly thought he faced a three-game ban.

‘Of course, the referee had to follow the rules but this will give him three games, in the end I feel bad for him because he gets three games [sic],’ Haaland told Sky Sports.

‘Just give the goal, don’t give a red card. Simple as that. It’s the rules and how it is.’

The loss leaves Liverpool sixth in the table, four points behind Chelsea in fifth and five behind Manchester United in fourth.

Carragher is concerned that the Premier League champions will not be in the Champions League next season, largely due to a lack of control in central midfield.

‘The manager has another decision to make on the front four,’ he said.

‘If Liverpool continue the way they are, with a front four and the games end-to-end, I just don’t see how they can make the Champions League positions.

‘But no matter what Arne Slot does, the make-up of this squad and team isn’t right. It never looks stable, they are never in control.

‘There is a long road ahead for Liverpool to make the Champions League places.’
