Aston Villa are reportedly interested in a highly-rated Liverpool star

Aston Villa are reportedly plotting a bold move to sign Liverpool central midfielder Curtis Jones in the summer transfer window.

The Villans are currently on course to have one of their best ever Premier League seasons but remain in the market for fresh talent, particularly in central midfield where they have been hit by an avalanche of injury issues.

Boubacar Kamara is out for the remainder of the campaign with a knee issue which could extend into the start of next season while the likes of Amadou Onana, John McGinn and Youri Tielemans have had their battles with injuries at various stages of the campaign.

The West Midlands outfit have the option to sign Douglas Luiz on a permanent deal once his loan move expires but similar could explore other younger alternatives, particularly if the Brazilian does not rediscover his old levels after failing to hit the mark at Juventus and Nottingham Forest.

Aston Villa plot move for Curtis Jones

Jones, has been a key member of the Liverpool squad in recent seasons, but is out of contract at Anfield in 2027.

The 25-year-old is also not a guaranteed first team starter at Anfield at present due to competition from Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Florian Wirtz and Dominik Szoboszlai and could potentially depart to make way for younger alternatives, with Liverpool World mentioning Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi as a possible target.

Jones has played over 200 matches for his boyhood club, is blessed with terrific stamina, tactical intelligence and the ability to cut out opposition attacks. He’s also capable of playing right-back in an injury crisis which could be important given the club’s reliance on Matty Cash at present.

The England international was the subject of interest from Inter Milan in January and is also thought to be on the radar of Premier League heavyweights Newcastle United.

Why Aston Villa could have advantage in race to sign Jones

Aston Villa are on track to have one of their best ever Premier League seasons. They are third in the table as things stand and are well on course to secure Champions League football after a year out of Europe’s elite competition.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United are currently experiencing their most challenging campaign since 2021/22 and are now trailing the top five positions by 10 points after another demolarising loss to Brentford.

The Magpies may not qualify for any form of European football this term, meanwhile, Villa would be in a position to attract top calibre players due to the high likelihood that they make it into the Champions League again.
