City have already clawed their way back to 1-1 in the second half when the match is turned on its head again. Following a lengthy VAR review on Matheus Nunes being wiped out by Alisson Becker, referee Craig Pawson points to the spot. Dominik Szoboszlai does his utmost to put off Erling Haaland, who has been out of sorts in recent weeks. Haaland, for once, looks nervous.

Haaland kisses the ball, places it on the ground and then launches into a galloping run up before firing the penalty into the bottom left corner. He then rips off his shirt in ecstasy and is mobbed by City players. Some fans in the away section, who have so rarely enjoyed victory at Anfield, clamber over barriers in an attempt to get on the pitch. Pep Guardiola, meanwhile, is beside himself.

A shell-shocked Liverpool are throwing players forward after Erling Haaland’s late penalty snatched the lead for City. Alexis Mac Allister latches on to a hoisted long ball from Ryan Gravenberch and catches it beautifully on the turn to send a shot goalwards from 25 yards. But Gianluigi Donnarumma, the 6ft 6in City keeper, uses every inch to leap and palm the Argentine’s shot wide as it loops towards the top left corner. It is one of the saves of the season and will be among the champagne-toasting moments if City claw back Arsenal’s lead.

Alisson has been a late match-winner with a goal for Liverpool before − at West Bromwich Albion − and once again the goalkeeper joins the home team’s attack for a corner. Unfortunately for him, Florian Wirtz, who had earlier missed a brilliant chance, sends a lofted corner over his head, allowing Donnarumma to punch away.

Still Liverpool press forward and manage to get a ball back in the box. Amid frenzied City attempts to get the ball away, Mohamed Salah goes down amid a heap of bodies. Rodri had been among the players who had gone in to challenge him. But amid a quick VAR check, City managed to get the ball clear.

As the ball bounces towards the Liverpool half, Szoboszlai hoofs it back forward but can only find Alisson’s head. His attempt at a flick-on allows City to intercept again and then scamper forward with an empty pitch ahead.

In what may go down as the slowest-ever effort to hit the net from the halfway line, Rayan Cherki side-foots the ball forward with an onrushing Haaland appearing certain to latch on to it to fire home.

Haaland and Szoboszlai are in a head-to-head sprint race for the ball. Szoboszlai, clearly not fancying his chances, pulls him back and, as they wrestle for the ball, Cherki’s effort dribbles over the line.

“That one has just killed the joy,” cries Gary Neville as a VAR review of the tussle between Haaland and Szoboszlai prompts Pawson to chalk the third goal off. It was a pointless review, but footage showed Haaland had also fouled Szoboszlai as the ball trickles over the line. And the mayhem is over.
