Sunderland's average xG compared to Liverpool and other Premier League rivals ahead of Stadium…

How does Sunderland’s attacking threat compare to their rivals across the Premier League?

Sunderland will look to preserve their unbeaten home record and return to winning ways when they face Premier League rivals Liverpool at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday night.

The Black Cats are sitting inside the top ten of the Premier League table following their defeat at title favourites Arsenal on Saturday - and the mood remains overwhelmingly positive on Wearside as Regis Le Bris and his players enjoy an outstanding return to the top flight.

Wednesday’s home clash with Liverpool will provide a sizeable test of Sunderland’s record on their home patch - but there will be confidence they can claim another positive result after the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and Aston Villa all failed to take maximum points from a trip to Wearside earlier in the season.

The Reds will hope to become the first side to secure a win at the Stadium of Light this season and boost their hopes of securing a top five finish. Despite the absence of record signing Alexander Isak, the impressive form of several other attacking options means Arne Slot’s men have become one of the most dangerous sides in forward areas across the Premier League and can boast one of the best average expected goals record in the division.

The same can not be side of Sunderland, who actually sit at the other end of the xG table and that just shows how prolific the Black Cats have been in taking the chances they have created. Ahead of Wednesday night’s meeting with Liverpool, we see how Sunderland’s average xG compares to their Premier League rivals.

Speaking after the defeat at the Emirates Stadium, Le Bris said: “We showed character and personality with and without the ball. It was the game we expected. We knew Arsenal were really well rounded and have the ability to be impactful from set-pieces and especially after the counter press. We lost two balls and conceded two goals.

“It doesn't mean our game wasn't good. Especially at the beginning of the second half we had a couple of opportunities to be back in the game. We didn't seize those opportunities and against an opponent like Arsenal if you don't seize those few opportunities, the game is gone.

“Absolutely [it’s a different feeling to the West Ham and Brentford games]. The scoreline might be the same but it wasn't the same game. In this league you have to show resilience. We have another game at home in three days. It's another exciting challenge and we have to try to be at our best.”
