The Minnesota Timberwolves went into the trade deadline with their eyes on Giannis Antentokounmpo. They left the deadline making a more minor move acquiring bench contributor Ayo Dosunmu. That didn’t stop teams around the league from moving star players, and the Dallas Mavericks were among them.

Still reeling from the horrendous Luka Doncic trade Nico Harrison made, the franchise officially pulled the plug on the return. Anthony Davis was shipped to the Washington Wizards, and D’Angelo Russell was sent with him. Except the former MN Timberwolves guard is having none of it.

One time MN Timberwolves guard D’Angelo Russell still a problem

There has almost never been a point in time where D’Angelo Russell hasn’t found his way into a controversy. As a rookie he quickly earned the ire of his Lon Angeles Lakers teammate Nick Young for outing him cheating on Iggy Azalea. The two have been at odds since. Now though, Russell is making his own problems.

“In the trade, we brought back four players…With D’Angelo [Russell] we talked to him, talked to his representatives. At the time, he’s not going to report until we try to figure out what’s best for him and us in our future.”

Will Dawkins – Washington general manager

Russell was shipped from a 19-33 Dallas Mavericks team to a 14-37 Washington Wizards team. Neither of them are any good, but it’s clear Cooper Flagg represents the future for Dallas. Why Russell wants to sit out remains a mystery, but selfishness or childish actions have long followed him.

He certainly wouldn’t fit on this 32-22 Minnesota Timberwolves team. Russell played two years on bad Ryan Saunders teams before lasting just a year and a half with Chris Finch.

After playing just 58 games last year split between Brooklyn and the Lakers, he has played in just 26 this season for Dallas. The 29-year-old is averaging a career-worst 10.2 points per game on 40.5% from the field. For a player with such high expectations as a former second overall pick, he’s made a career of longevity as opposed to notability.

How this saga ultimately plays out remains to be seen. It sure appears that D’Angelo Russell won’t ever suit up for the Washington Wizards, and the MN Timberwolves shouldn’t be expected to come calling either.
