Erling Haaland involved in hilarious moment with Marc Guehi after Liverpool fans boo defender during loss to Man City
Manchester City striker Erling Haaland was involved in a hilarious moment with teammate Marc Guehi after City secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Liverpool.
Guehi was subjected to jeers throughout the crunch tie, with the defender’s every touch constantly booed by the home crowd at Anfield. The harsh reception came as no surprise, as Guehi was previously on the verge of a transfer to Liverpool last summer, only for his former club, Crystal Palace, to halt the deal late in the window.
Fast forward to the January transfer window, Manchester City acquired the services of the England international for an initial £20 million, with the player penning a deal with the club until 2031.
After Dominik Szoboszlai had given Liverpool the lead midway through the second half, it was Guehi who had the last laugh as Haaland completed a late turnaround, scoring from the spot to keep City’s title hopes alive.
Meanwhile, drama unfolded late on as City had a third goal disallowed. In a bid to score an equalizer, the hosts committed bodies forward, including goalkeeper Alisson Becker, but were caught on the counter.
Cherki received the ball after a Bernardo Silva clear-out, with Haaland also through on goal. But the midfielder chose to score from a distance. The goal was, however, ruled out for double fouls in the buildup, with Szoboszlai receiving a red card.
“Why did Cherki not pass to me?” Haland hilariously asked Guehi at full-time.”
Both hugged each other, and Haaland said to the camera:
“Film this geezer! Run after him, go on, go film him! He got booed all the time. Go on, film him. Go film him! Go on, he’s there!”
Timed at 92:42, Erling Haaland’s penalty for Manchester City was the latest winning goal on record by a visiting team at Anfield in the Premier League (since 2006-07).
“I’m not sure why” – Marc Guehi responds to being booed by Liverpool fans
Guehi admitted to being puzzled after being at the receiving end of jeers from the Anfield crowd and thanked City fans for supporting him throughout the game.
He said post-match:
“Yeah... I'm not sure why, to be honest! But I can't control what their fans think of me. I'm just grateful for OUR fans for sticking by me and supporting me the whole game!”
So far, Guehi has made three appearances for City, starting every match since he joined the club.
