Speculation has ramped up in recent weeks regarding Sandro Tonali’s future.
Arsenal will reportedly renew their interest in Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali this summer.
Transfer deadline day saw the Gunners linked with a shock move for the Toon talisman. NewcastleWorld understands there was never any serious chance of Tonali leaving St James’ Park this winter.
The reporters were swiftly rejected but, since the window passed, Tonali’s agent has gone rogue to suggest a summer switch could be on the cards. Some Toon fans have married Beppe Riso’s comments with the remarks Tonali made following Newcastle’s win over Athletic Bilbao in November.
Sandro Tonali agent goes rogue
Speaking late last week Tonali’s agent left the door open for a potential exit - with proposed talks planned later this year. He told TuttoSport: "Newcastle are having a hard time letting go of Sandro and he wants to lead the club to the Champions League. “These transfer discussions will take place later. We’ll see how the season ends and then we’ll decide what to do.
“There’s no preference at the moment. It’s still early. What we’re saying today won’t apply tomorrow. Newcastle couldn’t let him go now, and there’s no point in moving, especially since Sandro is very attached to the club. We’ll evaluate and decide what to do in the summer.”
What Sandro Tonali said in November
The midfielder gave a far from convincing answer on his Newcastle future when speaking to reporters in November. Tonali said: “This is a tough question because in football you need to think year on year. I don’t want to say ‘I want to stay here 10 years’ and in two years, three years, four years, five years I will go. I want to think, just for me, year on year.
“This is football. Last summer was tough for us, for Alex [Isak], but this is football.
“If you have an option for your life, for another team you need to think about everything. I don’t want to say, ‘Yes, I want to stay here for 10 years but now I’m happy here. I don’t think anything about another team.”
Arsenal to renew Sandro Tonali interest
Football Transfers now claim Arsenal will be back in for Tonali once the summer window opens. As highlighted in his comments, the 25-year-old's agent already plans to sit down with Toon officials to discuss a potential move.
The engine room is thought to be an area that the Gunners look to improve on regardless of whether they win the Premier League title. Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi are the first-choice options at the base of midfield, with Mikel Merino and Christian Norgaard - who has 32 minutes of top-flight action all season - in reserve.
