Tottenham Hotspur star Cristian Romero has recently been in the news for his criticism of the club’s board.
At the weekend, the Argentina international received a straight red in Spurs’ 2-0 loss to Manchester United. This was his second sending off of this season and he’ll miss Tottenham’s next four domestic matches.
The centre-back’s future beyond this season could be away from the Premier League side.
Five days ago, TyC Sports reported the 27-year-old will leave Thomas Frank’s side in the summer. Atlético Madrid, who wanted him last summer, have made a fresh approach.
D Sports now report Barcelona and Real Madrid have joined Diego Simeone’s side in the chase for the World Cup winner.
Last August, Romero signed a contract until 2029, and Barcelona will have to spend big to secure his services.
Tottenham to be offered players
The Catalan club, led by their president Joan Laporta, have a desire to beat Real Madrid for the defender’s signature. It won’t be easy mainly because of the price and Barcelona’s own financial situation.
Hansi Flick’s side plan to offer a swap deal to considerably lower the South American’s price.
The La Liga giants intend to offer ‘high profile footballers’ to tempt the English club. D Sports insist this could ‘unlock’ the deal.
Barca centre-back Ronald Araújo is mentioned as an option. Recent claims from elsewhere have mentioned of Tottenham’s interest in the Uruguayan. There’s no mention whether Araújo is willing to move to the Premier League side.
Barcelona believe ‘living in Catalonia and being a cornerstone of the new defensive project could tip the scales in their favour’ to sign Romero. That may not be the case in reality as the report indicate Real Madrid are now ahead in the transfer race.
Romero played 28 matches this season and even managed six goals and four assists for Tottenham.
