In what could be one of the most eye-catching transfer sagas of the summer, Chelsea are reportedly advancing in talks to sign Argentine forward Julián Álvarez from Spanish side Atletico Madrid.
According to fresh reports, CHELSEA have opened negotiations and are pushing to bring the 26-year-old striker back to the Premier League — potentially edging ahead of rival suitors in the race for his signature.
Alvarez remains one of Europe’s most exciting and versatile attacking talents, and speculation continues to build around a dramatic move back to England. While a deal is far from guaranteed, there’s growing belief that Chelsea could make a serious attempt to land him this summer — and for good reason.
And reporter Iomie Stanley has had his say on the potential signing of Julian Alvarez, he told icfootballnews: ‘Julián Álvarez is not just any striker. He has developed into a complete forward with the ability to change matches and influence big games — traits that would be hugely valuable for a Chelsea side looking to rebuild its attacking identity.
‘Alvarez first arrived in England with Manchester City in 2022, following a highly-successful period at River Plate. At City, he became an important part of Pep Guardiola’s squad, contributing goals and assists while helping win multiple trophies, including Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League.
‘Despite playing in a team dominated by Erling Haaland, he still managed to make over 100 appearances and deliver consistently in a range of attacking positions. That Premier League experience is crucial; Alvarez knows what it takes to succeed in England’s top flight and would not face the same adaptation challenges that many foreign signings do.
‘At Atletico Madrid — where he moved in 2024 for around £82m — Alvarez has continued to show his quality, scoring goals and linking play in La Liga
What He’d Bring to Chelsea
‘Alvarez is comfortable both as the main striker and in a support role. He combines intelligent movement with the ability to score from varied positions — whether on the shoulder of defenders, arriving late in the box, or linking with creative midfielders. His work rate and tactical intelligence make him a nightmare for opponents to mark.
‘Already a World Cup winner with Argentina and a Champions League winner with Manchester City, Alvarez brings winning experience to Stamford Bridge. That pedigree matters for a club that wants to consistently compete at the top of the Premier League and in European competitions.
‘CHELSEA — like many clubs — have learned the hard way that not all foreign forwards adapt easily to English football. Alvarez’s proven league track record, however, suggests he could hit the ground running and contribute immediately.
‘Modern strikers are more than goalscorers; they must press defenders, help retain possession, and link play. Alvarez excels in all these areas, making him a true modern forward who would fit Chelsea’s tactical approach under their current coaching setup.’
