Liverpool boss Arne Slot admits his team have little room for error if they are to finish in the Champions League positions this season.
With 13 matches left to play, Aston Villa have an eight-point cushion over sixth-placed Liverpool and will be hoping to extend that buffer in midweek.
Villa host an out-of-form Brighton side at home, while the Reds face a difficult assignment away at Sunderland, also on Wednesday night.
Liverpool fell to a 2-1 defeat by Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday despite taking the lead in the 74th minute through Dominik Szoboszlai, which came as a boost for Villa, who actually gained ground on Slot's team over the weekend despite being pegged back in a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth.
"We know what the table looks like. But we also know there are a lot of games to be played,” Slot admitted on Sky Sports.
“I said to the players, again, that they showed today what they are capable of.
"I definitely see progression but we also know there are not so many games to be played so there is not a lot of room for error or mistakes.
"It's another time, in my opinion, that we didn't get what we deserved. I can keep saying it but people will probable be annoyed.
“I try to analyse the game as fairly as possible and that's what I'm trying to do now.”
