Manchester City defender Marc Guehi
Manchester City centre-back Marc Guehi shared his thoughts about getting booed by Liverpool fans following City's 2-1 Premier League win at Anfield on Sundau (February 8).
In a keenly fought affair, the Reds opened the scoring through Dominic Szoboszlai in the 74th minute, but City were back on level terms 10 minutes later, thanks to Bernardo Silva. Deep in stoppage time, Erling Haaland scored a penalty to give a come-from-behind win for the visitors.
Guehi, 25, was pursued by the Reds in the last summer transfer window and also completed a medical before Crystal Palace stalled the move, eventually selling him to City in January while the Reds opting to wait till the summer. Asked about the reaction from the Anfield crowd, the Englishman said (as per Liverpool Echo):
"It was good, I think I expected everything that was going to happen today. A fantastic atmosphere, great game of football so it was nice to win. No, not really (if the booing affected him). I tried to just play my game, to be honest. How they feel is how they feel, and that's fine."
About the team's come-from-behind win, Guehi reflected:
"It's just satisfying that we got the three points, it doesn't matter who it's against. It's a fantastic team, great club, but three points is three points so doesn't really matter."
Despite the loss, the Reds (39) remain sixth in the standings after 25 matches, with second-placed City (50) trailing leaders Arsenal by six points.
"He had a great interception" - Liverpool boss Arne Slot praises Marc Guehi
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot
Liverpool boss Arne Slot was all praise for Manchester City centre-back Marc Guehi for a superb intereception that prevented the Reds the chance of going 3-1 up in their Premier League clash on Sunday.
Just before City went ahead through Erling Haaland's penalty in the 94th minute, Curtis Jones nearly fed Mohamed Salah in a promising position, but Guehi snuffed out the opportunity,
"It's every time a different goal, of course," Slot said. "Just before that moment when they scored the 2-1 we went with Curtis (Jones) in a very promising situation, Mo (Salah) went deep, Curtis is such a special and good player on the ball, so there was a fair chance he would have maybe eight out of 10 times (found Salah).
"Guehi had a great interception, a great signing of them. (He) had a great interception in that moment and that is how the margins between these teams are - and were today."
Guehi has played three Premier League games for City, who have won twice and drawn the other as they seek a fifth Premier League title in six seasons.
