Contact made: Liverpool now in talks to sign "excellent" midfielder who's been compared to Pirlo

Liverpool have now entered talks to sign a midfield star ahead of Premier League rivals Arsenal.

Slot admits "disappointment" after Man City defeat

When Dominik Szoboszlai struck from range in a manner that only he is becoming known for in English football these days, it looked as though Arsenal had one hand on the Premier League title and Liverpool a step back in the race for Champions League qualification. It simply hasn't been that routine for the Reds this season, however.

As frustrating as Gakpo: FSG must ditch £35m Liverpool flop this summer

Liverpool must finally move on from this flop who is as frustrating as Cody Gakpo.

As has been the case far too many times, Liverpool's lead quickly imploded. Szoboszlai's moment remained fleeting rather than decisive, as Bernardo Silva soon equalised and Alisson's ill-timed mistake allowed Erling Haaland to seal City's comeback from the spot.

The drama didn't stop there, either, with Szoboszlai controversially sent off at the death after desperately pulling Haaland's shirt when the Norwegian was sprinting onto an empty net. Even though the ball still found the back of the net, a free-kick was awarded and the midfielder was given his marching orders.

Arne Slot had his say on another frustrating Anfield afternoon, telling reporters: "I am feeling anger and disappointment because, first half, City were the better team without creating that many big chances except the one from Haaland, but the improvement we have made since three or four months ago was visible for everyone."

"It was a fantastic second half and I was expecting to be more than 1-0 up and then we conceded two goals."

There will be more questions about the Dutchman's future, despite an improved performance, and more questions about Liverpool's potential summer business. They've already signed Jeremy Jacquet and could now sign a Premier League star to match.

Liverpool hold talks to sign Sandro Tonali

As reported by TeamTalk, Liverpool have now held talks to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United this summer, making contact with his representatives.

Sandro Tonali Newcastle-1

The Italian was linked with a move to Arsenal on deadline day in the January transfer window, before a move failed to ever progress. The Gunners' interest very much remains, however, as does that of Man City - sparking a fierce Premier League race in the coming months.

It's clear to see why there's so much interest in the former AC Milan man. After comparing his midfield star to the iconic Andrea Pirlo, Eddie Howe continued to praise Tonali last season, dubbing him "excellent", and it doesn't get much better than that for the Newcastle man.

"When I first saw Sandro play, there were definite links to Pirlo, without a doubt - and it's not just the hair. There's more to it than that.

"He's definitely got those similar qualities in terms of build and style, but I think the thing that sets Sandro apart from anyone else was he could do all of those things technically and tactically, and looked really good, but it's his athleticism as well, his ability to run."

Given the frailties of Liverpool's midfield from a physical standpoint this season, signing a player of Tonali's calibre should be one of their top priorities this summer.
