The debate around whether Liverpool have done enough to shore up the backline has only grown louder in recent weeks, with every defensive wobble fuelling calls for further reinforcements. The club moved to address those concerns with the big-money summer capture of highly rated Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet, a deal seen as part of a longer-term reset at the heart of defence.
Yet, almost as soon as the ink dried, fresh anxiety has emerged. Jacquet has suffered a serious left-shoulder injury this past weekend, with reports in France suggesting surgery cannot be ruled out and that his end to the campaign could be compromised. For a fanbase already worried about depth and durability at centre-back, the possibility of their new signing arriving at Anfield having just come through an operation only intensifies the noise.
However, fresh reports from Germany assert that Liverpool may not be done shopping for the defensive ranks. Fussballdaten have claimed that Liverpool, alongside Inter Milan and Tottenham Hotspur, are looking at Wolfsburg defender Konstantinos Koulierakis as a potential transfer option ahead of the summer window.
Journalist Ekerem Konour reports:
“Liverpool FC have put Koulierakis on their “A-list” to plan for the long term for the time after Virgil van Dijk. At the same time, Tottenham Hotspur is said to have requested weekly development reports at board level. His calmness under pressure, as well as his leadership qualities during World Cup qualifying, have made him a priority transfer target.”
He adds that the German side will find it difficult to keep the Greek international past this summer. This is not the first time Koulierakis has been linked with a switch to Anfield, suggesting there are some legs to this story.
Wolfsburg hold a strong hand at the negotiating table, with the player tied down until June 2029. The report states that the club has indicated a minimum price in the 35-to-45-million-euro range. There have been no formal bids so far.
The 22-year-old has racked up 20 appearances across all competitions so far this campaign.
