Manchester City walked out of Anfield with a massive 2-1 win that could yet define the Premier League title race, and they did it the hard way. Dominik Szoboszlai’s stunning second-half free-kick had Anfield rocking and Liverpool on course for a statement victory, only for Pep Guardiola’s side to flip the script in the closing stages.
Bernardo Silva pounced late to level before Erling Haaland slammed home a stoppage‑time penalty after Alisson fouled Matheus Nunes, silencing a furious home crowd and keeping City firmly on Arsenal’s heels. Inside that storm, it was easy to forget that it was Marc Guehi’s first game as a Manchester City player at Anfield after his failed Liverpool transfer.
And the Anfield faithful let him know in no uncertain terms as he was booed by large sections of the stadium. Understandably so, the England international was left confused as to why he was given that treatment in a post-game interview with his new club:
“I’m not sure why, to be honest,” he said as quoted by City Studios. “But I can’t control what their fans think of me.”
“I’m just grateful for our fans for sticking by me and supporting me the whole game.”
“Credit to the fans, they came out in numbers and supported us from the beginning right to the end.”
“Someone said that’s the first time we’ve won here with fans since 2003. I actually didn’t know that at all,” Guehi added.
“I think it’s great for them to see that and experience that. Credit to everyone for showing such resilience in such a tough game.”
“So yeah well done to everyone.”
In truth, the failed move to Liverpool was never really in Marc Guehi’s hands, hinging instead on club-to-club wrangling.
The boos he heard at Anfield said far more about Liverpool’s desire to create a hostile environment for a key opposition defender than about anything he actually did wrong. If anything, Guehi simply became a convenient lightning rod for frustration over a failed transfer saga.
