Incoming Liverpool centre-back Jeremy Jacquet may need surgery on shoulder damage that would leave him in danger of missing the remainder of the season. Jacquet, who will arrive at Anfield in the summer after the Reds last week agreed a £60million deal with Rennes, suffered the injury during the French team's 3-1 Ligue 1 defeat to Lens on Saturday.

The 20-year-old was forced off midway through the second half of the match having previously featured in every minute this season for which he wasn't suspended.

Speaking after the game, Rennes boss Habib Beye said: “For Jeremy, it's his shoulder. We'll have time to see, but it's definitely quite serious."

And now French news outlet L'Equipe has stated that Jacquet could now require surgery to repair the damage with an operation that would leave him facing weeks on the sidelines.

Liverpool are monitoring the situation having already seen last summer's young big-money defensive recruit, Giovanni Leoni, ruled out for the campaign having suffered an ACL injury on his Reds debut in September.

It is a major setback to both Jacquet and Rennes, who have now lost four successive games in the league and domestic cup during which they have conceded 12 goals.

The defender opted to remain at Rennes for the remainder of the season rather than make the switch to Liverpool during the recent transfer window in the hope of helping the club secure European qualification.

They currently stand in sixth place in Ligue 1, which would be sufficient for a Conference League berth next season.
