Liverpool are limping towards the end of the season, but is Arne Slot’s position safe as manager?

The numbers for this season don’t make for pleasant reading for Liverpool manager Arne Slot.

Currently in sixth place, five points behind Man United in fourth, the Reds have a bit of work to do to catch the two teams above them who are both in a rich vein of form. That Slot will have to travel to Sunderland without his player of the season, Dominik Szoboszlai, only makes matters worse. A positive run of performances and results should see them climb the table, however, could this be with a different manager in charge.

Liverpool update on Arne Slot’s future

Michael Carrick and Liam Rosenior have shown what can be achieved with the right person in charge employing tactics that suit the squad available to them with the feeling still being that Slot’s pragmatism is holding Liverpool back.

According to journalist David Lynch, though, it doesn’t look like the Anfield hierarchy is considering swinging the axe anytime soon: “The word from Liverpool is that Arne Slot is safe, but I don't really buy the idea he can afford endless poor performances and bad results until the end of the season. Today was both, in my opinion.”

Since September, Liverpool have been in relegation form. Literally. Had the season started a few weeks later, they would be just a point above the drop zone and only four away from bottom of the table Burnley.

Winning the Premier League at the first attempt was a huge achievement for Slot, but there is no getting away from the current state of play and where Liverpool currently find themselves. It isn’t just the results it is what fans are seeing, performances and the results. They are at a real crossroads in terms of backing Slot or deciding that a more attack minded manager could get more out of a talented group of players.

Arne Slot facing injury crisis

Speaking after the defeat to City, via Liverpool’s official website, Slot gave an injury update that suggested he might have a problem to solve at right-back: “Jeremie for sure not. We knew this when he got injured, that it was a few weeks. To be honest, I don't expect Joe to be back as well, but you never know. But then he is back after being out for three weeks, would you play him then? You say no, but you don't have to make the decision - I have to make the decision.

“Let's see what decision we make. We have other players that can play that position as well. Dom - again - played a very good game in that position but unfortunately he is unavailable for Wednesday.” If Calvin Ramsay still doesn’t get a game, he must be wondering if there is any point turning up for training on a daily basis.
