Three things we learned – Liverpool 1-2 Manchester City

Manchester City grabbed a stoppage time winner to record their first victory at Anfield in front of fans in 23 years.

The Blues, who also completed their first league double over Liverpool in 90 years, scored twice after the 80th minute, with Bernardo Silva equalising and Erling Haaland scoring from the spot after Liverpool had taken the lead through Dominik Szoboszlai’s stunning free kick.

City could’ve had a third, but the goal was disallowed by VAR due to mutual fouling between Haaland and Szoboszlai as they chased down Rayan Cherki’s goal bound halfway line shot towards an empty net, with Szoboszlai sent off for denying a clear goal scoring opportunity.

Here are three things we learned as City broke their Anfield hoodoo:

**Ait-Nouri is finding his feet**

Injuries and AFCON means it’s been a slow start to Rayan Ait-Nouri’s Manchester City career, but he’s beginning to find some form.

The Algerian full back was fantastic against Liverpool, keeping Mohamed Salah quiet and providing City’s main attacking threat down the left hand side.

Competition is extremely high with Nico O’Reilly playing well, but whilst he’s performing so well in midfield, it only seems fair that Ait-Nouri keeps the left back position for himself for the foreseeable future.

**Never doubt Erling Haaland**

It’s a fair criticism of Haaland that he often doesn’t offer enough other than goals, but he can also win City games.

His athleticism in the box to flick the header into Bernardo Silva’s path was excellent, and then the coolness to slot the penalty into the bottom corner was remarkable.

He hasn’t scored enough in 2026, but hopefully this will now be the start of a great run of form for the 25-year-old.

**Donnarumma is the best goalkeeper in the world**

As good as James Trafford has been when asked to deputise, no-one is as good in world football between the sticks as Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The Italian goalkeeper made a contender for save of the season after Haaland’s goal, leaping high in the air to tip Alexis MacAllister’s deflected volley over the bar.

Donnarumma is the best shot stopper in the world, but his ball playing also isn’t as bad as people make it out to be.

He’s probably better in this regard than Trafford, and obviously not as good as Ederson, but it’ll be a generation until we see someone as good as the Brazilian.

The 26-year-old is here to stay for the long term, and will be a key part of any trophies City go on to win this season.
