Jeremy Jacquet has endured a difficult week that may now end with surgery. The 20-year-old, who is set to join Liverpool in the summer after the Reds agreed a £60million deal with Rennes last week, was injured during Rennes’ 3–1 Ligue 1 defeat to Lens on Saturday.
Jacquet was forced off midway through the second half, having previously played every available minute this season when not suspended. Speaking after the game, Rennes boss Habib Beye said: “For Jeremy, it’s his shoulder. We’ll have time to see, but it’s definitely quite serious.”
Reports suggest the defender could require surgery, which would sideline him for several weeks. Liverpool are monitoring the situation closely, having already seen last summer’s highly rated defensive signing Giovanni Leoni ruled out for the season with an ACL injury suffered on his Reds debut.
The setback is a blow for both Jacquet and Rennes, who have now lost four consecutive matches across all competitions, conceding 12 goals in the process.
Jacquet chose to remain with Rennes for the rest of the season rather than move to Liverpool in January, hoping to help the club secure European qualification. Rennes currently sit sixth in Ligue 1, a position that would earn a place in next season’s Conference League.
Rennes have released an official statement confirming they have “initiated a procedure” against Beye and placed reserve-team coach Sébastien Tambouret in temporary charge.
The decision comes ahead of Rennes’ upcoming clash with champions Paris Saint-Germain. The club have not won since early January and were knocked out of the French Cup 3–0 by Marseille during a four-match losing run.
A club statement read: “Stade Rennais F.C. has initiated proceedings against its head coach Mr. Habib Beye and his assistants Messrs. Olivier Saragaglia, Sébastien Bichard, and Yann Cavezza. Pending the forthcoming decision, the professional team’s training sessions will be overseen by Sébastien Tambouret, Pierre-Alexandre Lelièvre, and Maxime Le Marchand until further notice.”
