'Huge miss': Paul Merson predicts who will replace Dominik Szoboszlai for Liverpool vs Sunderland

Liverpool are set to be without Dominik Szoboszlai for their Premier League meeting with Sunderland on Wednesday.

The Merseyside outfit suffered two big blows on Sunday, first losing a one-goal lead to drop three points against Manchester City.

Secondly, Dominik Szoboszlai was sent off late in that clash after he pulled Erling Haaland’s shirt.

Mark Clattenburg has responded to the red card, saying the right decision was reached by VAR.

Do we all agree it’s time for Arne Slot to drop Cody Gakpo vs Sunderland? 🔄

What would your starting line-up be for the game? 🔮

That’s unlikely to be the view of fans, but regardless, the Hungarian’s absence leaves Arne Slot with a selection headache at right-back.

Who will replace Dominik Szoboszlai at right-back?

All of Liverpool’s natural senior options have been injured over the last month, and Szoboszlai has had to fill in on several occasions.

With the midfielder sidelined, however, Slot is going to need a new solution for the Sunderland meeting.

Now, speaking to Sportskeeda, Paul Merson has named who he thinks Liverpool will play at right-back this week.

He stated: “Szoboszlai will be a huge miss for Liverpool due to his suspension. Arne Slot has no right-back now and will probably use Curtis Jones there. Going away to Sunderland without someone like Szoboszlai, who has done so well this season, can have an impact on Liverpool.

I expect Slot to go with the same team, apart from the forced change at right-back. But I don’t see Liverpool winning this game.

Merson also predicted the game would end as a 1-1 draw.

There’s another option after Curtis Jones

Jones has featured as a defender for Liverpool already this season and performed adequately.

However, there is another option that Slot should really be considering.

For whatever reason, the manager has been very reluctant to play Calvin Ramsay at right-back despite the youngster being the only natural option available.

Slot’s use of Academy players has been slammed by an EFL chairman, and he does have a point.

Sunderland would be the perfect game for Ramsay to be given a chance, but fans know that’s not going to happen.
