Real Madrid’s persistent interest in Alexis Mac Allister has become an uncomfortable cloud sitting over Anfield over the last two seasons. Earlier this month, it was reported that Los Blancos could revive their interest in the Liverpool midfielder after receiving “positive” signals about a potential move.
With 18 months left on his Liverpool contract, the 27-year-old, who joined from Brighton in 2023, could be a realistic target. The player’s father, Carlos Mac Allister, recently responded to the reports, saying: What I can say at the moment is that Alexis is focused on Liverpool and the current season. Alexis is very happy and very comfortable with Liverpool.”
It’s fair to say that Mac Allister has been a shadow of his former self this season, registering zero Premier League goals and just two assists in 24 league appearances. Many have pointed toward the summer and how the Argentinean did not get a full pre-season due to lots of small injuries.
Mac Allister has made 130 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 17 goals and providing 17 assists. Last month, his representatives were reportedly approached by the Reds regarding a potential new contract.
However, Real Madrid interest is thought to date back even before his move to Liverpool, with the Athletic now reporting that the Reds were worried that the Spanish giants would try to hijack the deal from Brighton in 2023:
“There is no suggestion that he will not be at the forefront of Argentina’s plans as they seek to defend their World Cup title this summer, and interest from Real Madrid remains, as reported by The Athletic last week,” wrote Gregg Evans.
“The Spanish club have admired Mac Allister for some time: Liverpool feared they would try to hijack their deal to sign him from Brighton in June 2023, so they moved quickly to wrap it up.”
“Whether that adds to any uncertainty over his future remains to be seen.”
