Liverpool face Sunderland in the Premier League and could be without four right-back options.

Arne Slot has confirmed that Calvin Ramsay will not start for Liverpool despite the current right-back crisis.

The Reds head to Sunderland on Wednesday potentially without as many as four options in the full-back position. First-choice players Conor Bradley (knee) and Jeremie Frimpong (groin) are injured while Joe Gomez (hip) is only due to return to training today and remains doubtful.

Meanwhile, Dominik Szoboszlai - who has featured at right-back regularly this term - is suspended after his red card in the 2-1 loss to Manchester City last weekend.

Ramsay is an out-and-out right-back who has been on the bench for the past 10 Premier League games. He has made just one first-team appearance this season, which was a 3-0 Carabao Cup defeat by Crystal Palace, and had several injury problems since signing for Liverpool from Aberdeen in 2022.

There are sections of fans who would like to see Ramsay given a chance against Sunderland. But Slot admitted that will not happen, with Curtis Jones or Wataru Endo likely to instead feature should Gomez not be able to play from the outset.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Liverpool head coach Slot said: “If you don’t win a game, the players who are not playing become the best players in the squad. That is, I think, everywhere in the world the same. The players who are starting but not winning, the manager could have always chosen another, better one.

“But this is an example as well. I just want to protect all of my players. I have chosen other players until now and that’s also what I’m going to do tomorrow.”
