Official statement confirms ex-Newcastle United man sacked just days after Liverpool transfer…

Newcastle United latest news: Former Newcastle United defender Habib Beye has left his role as Stade Rennais manager.

Former Newcastle United defender Habib Beye has left his role as Stade Rennais manager.

Beye had been in charge of Stade Rennais for just over a year following his appointment in the final days of January 2025. Beye guided the club away from relegation danger during his first season at the club and had guided them to 6th place in the Ligue 1 table at the time of his departure.

However, a run of three successive defeats in the league plus a 3-0 reverse against Marseille in the Coupe de France led to his departure. Prior to joining Stade Rennais, the former Senegalese international had enjoyed three very successful years as Red Star FC manager in France and was picked as the man to replace Jorge Sampaoli in the dugout a little over 12 months ago after a disastrous 80-day reign as manager by the Argentine.

A club statement released on X about Beye’s future by Stade Rennais read: ‘𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲́ Stade Rennais F.C. has initiated proceedings against its head coach Mr. Habib Beye and his assistants Messrs. Olivier Saragaglia, Sébastien Bichard, and Yann Cavezza.

‘Pending the forthcoming decision, the professional team's training sessions will be overseen by Sébastien Tambouret, Pierre-Alexandre Lelièvre, and Maxime Le Marchand until further notice.’

Adding extra context to Beye’s departure, RMC Sport in France wrote: ‘The aftermath of the match at the Vélodrome was tense between Beye and some players, notably Brice Samba . A lot of information, often false or distorted, leaked from the locker room, creating a toxic and unhealthy atmosphere, according to sources within the club. At Stade Rennais, these political maneuvers are nothing new. They involve agents and intermediaries, creating cliques.

‘In recent days, power struggles have been particularly intense. This negative image for the institution may also have influenced the shareholder, the Pinault family. During the October crisis, when Beye was already close to being ousted, the owner decided to keep him in his position. But this time, three and a half months later, he did not veto his departure.’

Liverpool transfer decision impacts Habib Beye and Stade Rennais

Just last week, Beye’s hopes of helping Stade Rennais progress to the next level was handed a major blow when it was confirmed that Liverpool had signed defender Jeremy Jacquet. The young defender was admired by Chelsea heading into the final days of the January transfer window, but it would be the Reds who swooped for his signature.

Jacquet will officially join Liverpool in the summer for a fee of £60m. Jacquet’s signing comes after Liverpool missed out on adding Marc Guehi to Arne Slot’s ranks with the former Crystal Palace man instead opting to join Manchester City during the winter window.

Liverpool had been close to signing Guehi on deadline day in the summer, only for Palace to block a move at the eleventh-hour. It was assumed that they would eventually sign the England international on a free transfer when his contract at Selhurst Park expired at the end of the season, but they were instead gazumped by interest from the Etihad Stadium.
