**Xabi Alonso has been mentioned as a leading option to potentially replace Arne Slot at Liverpool, but a new update may concern Reds supporters.**
Patience is wearing thin with Slot now, following a bitterly disappointing season that has seen Liverpool’s Premier League title defence completely peter out.
For some, Alonso feels like the perfect man to come in and replace the Dutchman sooner rather than later, with the 44-year-old available after a failed spell at Real Madrid.
Speaking to [_Football Insider_](https://www.footballinsider247.com/xabi-alonso-opens-door-to-man-city-switch-after-liverpool-reveal/), journalist Callum O’Connell focused more on the idea of the Spaniard being Pep Guardiola’s successor at Manchester City:
_“Yeah, it’s a very attractive job. Obviously, Pep Guardiola will be a tough act to follow given the success he’s had at the Etihad. Man City will be looking for an elite manager to replace an elite manager. Xabi Alonso is obviously free, available and looking to come back into management following that spell at Real Madrid._
_“I’m sure his style of football would be something that would appeal to the City power brokers as well. So again, a young and up and coming manager. I’m sure he’s somebody that’s on City’s list as well. City will need to find a top manager to replace Guardiola because it will definitely be a big void to fill if Guardiola does eventually leave the club.”_
**Liverpool must avoid another Guehi situation with Man City**
--------------------------------------------------------------
Liverpool fans will be split over who they want to replace Slot, should they want a change of head coach, but Alonso certainly feels like a natural fit.
He is already loved at Anfield, following five excellent years there as a player, and he has proven his managerial credentials by winning the Bundesliga title with Bayer Leverkusen.
If City swooped in and got Alonso instead, it would feel like a big blow, similar to Marc Guehi choosing them over Liverpool in the January transfer window.
Granted, some may want others to be the Reds’ next boss, including Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique, but as things stand, their former player feels like a great option.
Slot cannot afford too many more bad results, and if Alonso wants to wait until the summer to make a decision, bringing in Steven Gerrard on a short-term basis wouldn’t feel like the worst call at this point.
