It is not a particularly happy time to be a Newcastle United supporter. The club’s much‑lauded project has hit a bump, their most recent summer business has been widely criticised as underwhelming, and there has been unwelcome noise around Eddie Howe’s position as questions grow over whether he is still the man to take them to the next level.
On top of that, the Sandro Tonali saga refuses to go away, with persistent chatter about a possible summer exit and Arsenal, along with several Serie A heavyweights, regularly mentioned as potential destinations for the Italian midfielder.
In anticipation of that scenario, Newcastle are already thought to be working on contingency plans in midfield – and one of the names at the top of their list is a familiar one to Liverpool fans.
According to a report from CaughtOffside, the Magpies have identified Lyon’s Tyler Morton as a leading candidate to replace Tonali should a big offer arrive. It is claimed Newcastle have been tracking Morton closely for months and currently view themselves as frontrunners in the race for his signature, despite interest from Premier League rivals such as Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest.
Morton, now 23, has enjoyed a breakout year in Ligue 1 after making a permanent switch from Liverpool to Lyon last summer. He joined the French side in a deal worth around £15 million, signing a long‑term contract and immediately establishing himself as a regular starter at the base of midfield.
This season he has racked up 17 league appearances, contributing 2 goals and 2 assists while logging well over 1,200 minutes and posting strong underlying numbers for passing, ball progression and defensive work.
Those performances have convinced some in England that Morton is ready to return to the Premier League as a more complete, battle‑hardened midfielder than the youngster who left Merseyside.
