Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has criticized Dominik Szoboszlai following his sending-off during the team's defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.

The Reds fell 2-1 at Anfield during Sunday's Premier League encounter, dealing a major setback to their hopes of securing Champions League soccer. Szoboszlai opened the scoring for Liverpool in the 74th minute, but the title holders responded with two late goals through Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland, the latter netting from the penalty spot.

The drama continued as Szoboszlai saw red for a foul on Haaland - hauling down the City forward just as the ball went over the line.

Referee Craig Pawson initially awarded the goal, but VAR intervened and overturned the decision, with Szoboszlai then shown a red card for the challenge on Haaland.

The Hungarian midfielder will now face a suspension following his red card against City, further depleting Arne Slot's options ahead of Wednesday's match against Sunderland.

Carragher, a club legend, was commentating during Liverpool's loss to City and was forthright in his assessment of Szoboszlai's challenge that resulted in the dismissal, ensuring the Hungary international sits out at least one match.

"It's a stupid decision by Szoboszlai," Carragher said on Sky Sports.

"For me, you just let it carry on, and the goal goes in, and I don't think anyone's complaining.

"It's absolutely daft from him because he's got time to think, he was running back."

Haaland also shared his thoughts on Szoboszlai's red card, implying that a third City goal without a Liverpool player being sent off would have been a more favorable scenario.

"Of course, the referee had to follow the rules, but this will give him three games - in the end, I feel bad for him because he gets three games," Haaland said, unaware that Szoboszlai's ban currently stands at just one game.

"Just give the goal, don't give a red card. Simple as that.

"It's the rules and how it is.

"If Cherki just passed me the ball so I can score... but he didn't want to, so that's just how it is!"
