A man has died in Scarborough two days after he was assaulted in Liverpool, police say.

On Sunday, February 1, a group of people assaulted two men on Oakfield Road in Anfield, Liverpool, at around 1.30am, reports the Liverpool Echo. The group fled the scene, and Merseyside Police arrived, finding a 53-year-old man with swelling to his face, and a 54-year-old man, with head and rib injuries.

Both of the men declined medical attention, and the 54-year-old returned home to Scarborough. There, on February 3, he died, and a post-mortem examination will now take place to establish his cause of death.

Two men, aged 20 and 28 from Croxteth, along with a 47-year-old man from Clubmoor and a 24-year-old man from Old Swan, have been arrested on suspicion of causing Section 18 grievous bodily harm with intent. They have been released on bail and the police are continuing their investigation.

The police are appealing for anyone with any information to come forward. They believe two taxi drivers, who had pulled over during the incident, and a member of the public, was present at the time, and may have captured the incident on their phone.

Detective Inspector Natalie Charlesworth said: “First and foremost our thoughts and condolences are with the family of the man who has died. We are appealing for anyone with information on the assault to please come forward to assist the investigation.

"North Yorkshire Police are leading the investigation into his death. We are keeping an open mind until we know the cause of death, and are conducting extensive enquiries so his family can get answers.

"We are aware that people were in the area and may have witnessed the incident and we urge them to please contact us as soon possible. We also very keen to speak to the two taxi drivers and the member of the public to please contact us as a matter of urgency."
