Emile Heskey spoke to Liverpool World about the Reds’ quiet January transfer window
Emile Heskey was eager to see Liverpool bring in significant reinforcements during the January transfer window as injury setbacks continue to limit Arne Slot’s options.
However, Opta Analyst has dubbed the Reds the ‘losers’ of the winter window, having failed to bring in any new senior personnel. The Premier League champions did agree a deal for Jeremy Jacquet but he won’t arrive at Anfield until the summer.
On the other end of the scale, Manchester City have earned Opta’s ‘winners’ title, thanks to their superb business to sign Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi.
Both of City’s signings were major Liverpool targets and Heskey, like so many fans and professionals, can’t help but feel the blow of his former side fumbling those deals for themselves.
Emile Heskey weighs in on underwhelming Liverpool transfer window
“I would have loved for them to have done more in the January window, especially with how thin Liverpool are laid, you’ve really just got to act,” the former Reds and England striker told Liverpool World, via aGamble.com.
“Missing out on players - missing out on Marc Guehi and Antoine Semenyo - then waiting until the summer to bring someone in is not ideal.
“But again, they are the ones in the firing line and they obviously see something different.”
Guehi came within a whisker of signing for Liverpool last summer but a late U-turn from Crystal Palace shut down negotiations in the twilight hours of Deadline Day. It was expected that the Reds would pick up where they left off with the centre-back in 2026 but he opted to sign for rivals City instead.
Liverpool fans made their feelings towards Guehi known during Man City’s visit to Anfield last weekend. The England international was subject to boos every time he was on the ball, following his £20 million transfer.
Semenyo also had a run out in front of the Liverpool fans. The winger had been earmarked as a potential long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah but again, City beat them to the punch.
The former Cherries star has five goal contributions in seven City appearances already since his £64 million switch to the Etihad.
