How Eagles’ Howie Roseman could exploit this proposed NFL rule

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman could be more aggressive than ever if a new NFL rule is passed this offseason.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, at least one NFL team will push for a rule allowing teams to trade draft picks up to five years in the future. Currently, general managers are only allowed to trade draft picks within three years, but some want the NFL to adapt NBA-style trade flexibility.

This could be music to Roseman’s ears.

Already one of the league’s most creative general managers, Roseman could find it easier to pull off big deals with more draft picks at his disposal.

Recently, Roseman’s biggest trade came in 2022, when he sent a first and third-round pick to the Tennessee Titans for wide receiver A.J. Brown. Since then, he has acquired other impact players like C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Jaelan Phillips without having to part with first-round picks.

But that doesn’t mean he hasn’t tried to trade one or even multiple first-round picks for the right player.

The Eagles have a history of offering massive deals for star players. Fox Sports insider Jay Glazer reported in September that Roseman offered the Cowboys two first-round picks, a third-round pick and a fifth-round pick for edge rusher Micah Parsons. The Eagles also reportedly had targeted Browns superstar edge rusher Myles Garrett before he agreed to an extension last offseason.

Roseman’s next big trade could come soon, especially if that new rule is passed.
