Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and Chelsea have all seen their recent links to Samu Aghehowa come to an abrupt halt. The striker is now ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering a serious knee injury.
As told by O Jogo, the forward picked up the problem during FC Porto’s 1-1 draw with Sporting. He left the pitch at half-time after going down shortly before the break. Portuguese reports explain that Samu suffered a sprain to his right knee, with a confirmed rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament. As a result, his 2025-26 season is over.
He steps out of this campaign as one of the most prolific strikers in the continent. Samu scored 20 goals in 31 matches in all competitions for Porto this season.
Tottenhamhave been the club most consistently linked with the Porto striker in recent months.Chelseahave also been mentioned in the background, whileNewcastle Unitedmade concrete enquiries about his situation during the summer window last year.
Samu’s big summer transfer will now be off
Samu
All three Premier League sides had kept tabs on his progress in Portugal. However, any plans involving a move to England are now off the table. That will cause disappointment at Tottenham, Chelsea and Newcastle United, plus any other interested clubs.
More importantly, it’s a cruel blow for the player.
Samu will still undergo further tests and is expected to seek additional medical opinions before deciding whether surgery is required. Even so, the expectation is that he faces a long rehabilitation period.
The Spanish Football Federation have already been informed. Consequently, the striker’s hopes of pushing for a place in Spain’s squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup have suffered a major setback.
For the Premier League trio or any other interested club, this injury changes everything. His next steps will now depend entirely on how fast and how good he can recover.
