Liverpool have the chance to hire the perfect manager.
Arne Slot's time at the club is over. No matter what the Dutchman achieved last season, he is simply out of depth and right now Liverpool are at a serious risk of missing out on next season's Champions League.
If that were to happen, it would be a disaster considering the £450m that was spent last summer.
This was supposed to be a campaign where Liverpool were going to compete on all fronts and continue their dominance in the Premier League.
Instead it has led to just six wins in the league, three since the end of August, which is an abysmal record and one that should see Slot losing his job.
If we are looking at the entirety of 2025, Slot had a win percentage of less than 50% for the entire calendar year. This year, it's 40%, having won just four games for the first 10 matches of 2026.
For a certain period of the season, there were valid arguments for not sacking Slot because there was simply no suitable alternative options.
Having delivered the league title last season, Slot had to be given more time. However, he has had enough.
All those arguments go out of the window now when you look at who is available and how bad Liverpool have been for a consistent period now.
The perfect replacement is literally right there and he can be hired right now, within seconds.
Xabi Alonso is that man. He is the manager Liverpool need, and he's the manager who not only has an impressive track-record in Europe's top five leagues but also has experience working with the club's current stars, including Florian Wirtz.
Things may not have worked out for Alonso at Real Madrid but it wasn't necessarily because he's not a good manager.
He tried to make a group of egos work harder and introduce stricter regimes which is why things ultimately backfired. The likes of Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr were never going to play his intense pressing style.
Liverpool's dressing room is different. There are egos but the club does a lot of background work on their character. First and foremost they are all team players.
That means they will be more willing to listen to Alonso's methods than the Real Madrid squad.
On top of that, if anything Slot has been a little too lax at times. The lack of intensity in training and the constant time off for the players may be negatively having an impact on Liverpool's press and work off the ball.
Alonso will introduce more training time and more work - similar to how Jurgen Klopp ran things prior to Slot.
That is exactly what Liverpool need right now. It's why Alonso is the perfect man for the job and it's why Richard Hughes and co. simply have to make that phone call and bring him to Anfield right now.
