Liverpool's record against newly promoted sides is very interesting ahead of Sunderland tie - opinion

Liverpool are looking to keep a number of impressive records going when they face Sunderland.

In the 2025/26 season, things are really not going well for the Reds or Arne Slot.

The 2-1 loss to Manchester City on Wednesday means Liverpool have won just one in seven Premier League games.

Do we all agree it’s time for Arne Slot to drop Cody Gakpo vs Sunderland? 🔄

What would your starting line-up be for the game? 🔮

Slot’s future is being called into question amid the club slipping out of the Champions League places.

And another tough game is now expected on Wednesday, when Liverpool are predicted to draw with Sunderland.

While the current campaign hasn’t been ideal for Slot and co, history is very much on Liverpool’s side going into this game.

In fact, there are four favourable statistics that suggest the Reds will not lose to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light:

Sunderland are winless in their last 11 Premier League games against Liverpool (drew five, lost six) since a 1-0 home victory in March 2012.

In the last 66 league meetings home and away, Liverpool have lost only five times.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last five visits to the Stadium of Light.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 19 Premier League games against promoted sides.

The 19-game unbeaten run against newly-promoted teams is especially interesting.

Liverpool drew 1-1 with Sunderland earlier this season when they were not at their best, while Regis Le Bris has suggested the Premier League champions have improved since that meeting.

Regis Le Bris shares Arne Slot verdict

Speaking live at his pre-match press conference on February 10, he said: “Liverpool are getting better, they are strong.

“Manager is really good, it’s a must-win for them so it’s a tough challenge but exciting.

The Sunderland boss has also commented on Lutsharel Geertruida, whom Liverpool tried to sign in the January transfer window.

Le Bris stated: “No problem. The transfer window is closed – then it’s the next stage.
