Despite rumors suggesting otherwise, the Warriors want Steve Kerr to remain their head coach beyond the 2025-26 season
To this point, the 2025-26 campaign has been a bit of a slog for the Golden State Warriors. While they remain a dangerous playoff threat, they currently are only the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference, and they are without one of their top players, Jimmy Butler, for the rest of the season. With the team continuing to struggle to consistently win games, questions about head coach Steve Kerr‘s future with the team have begun to pop up.
Kerr is in his 12th season as the Warriors’ head coach, but with the team appearing to hit a wall, some folks are wondering if this is the end of the line for him in Golden State. Whether it be Kerr retiring or the Warriors deciding to move on from him, it seems like all options are on the table. However, according to one NBA insider, it doesn’t seem like Kerr’s stint with Golden State will be ending anytime soon.
Steve Kerr, Warriors Not Looking to Part Ways Just Yet
While Steve Kerr's future has been a question mark, league sources told @ClutchPoints that the Warriors will work with Kerr to keep him as their head coach as long as he wants to be there.
All of the talk about the franchise not wanting him back is simply false. https://t.co/wEcTHDr9h6

During his time in charge of the Warriors, Kerr has played a major role in modernizing the NBA. With Stephen Curry leading the way, Golden State’s dynastic run during Kerr’s time in charge has helped spark a major increase in three-point shooting around the league. This has led to the Dubs winning four titles during this run, with Kerr playing a pivotal role in each victory.
Ever since winning the 2022 NBA Finals, though, the Warriors have been struggling to piece things together around Curry. Some of these issues fall on Kerr’s shoulders, such as his mismanagement of Jonathan Kuminga, while others are simply a result of the core group getting older, such as the front office’s decision to move on from Klay Thompson after the 2023-24 season.
This year has been the most trying of the bunch for Kerr. With things not working even before Butler’s aforementioned season-ending injury, the Warriors have come face-to-face with the end of their run. And yet, according to NBA insider Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, Golden State isn’t in a rush to move on from Kerr. In fact, all signs point to the team allowing him to remain in charge of the team for as long as he wants.
“All of the talk about the franchise not wanting him back is simply false, and there is nothing to suggest that Kerr’s coaching staff or the Warriors have been preparing for this to be his last season,” Siegel wrote. “The Dubs would like Kerr to continue coaching as long as he wants, and sources said the idea has always been for Kerr and Curry to retire together.”

The Warriors are doing everything in their power to remain competitive for as long as Curry is still playing, but it’s become increasingly difficult to do so. Serious questions about Draymond Green’s future with the team also exist, and the team’s struggles have led to these rumors about Kerr gaining serious traction as well.
And yet, Golden State seems intent on riding this group until the wheels fall off. Curry remains an elite scorer, even as he’s gotten older, and if the front office can surround him with a proper supporting cast, they could go on one last title run. As long as Curry is in town, it seems like Kerr is going to be his coach, regardless of whether or not that is the best move for the team.
