Mohamed Salah has been heavily linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League in recent years, with Al-Ittihad notably tabling a £150million bid in 2023. There is now a growing belief at Liverpool that the Egyptian forward could leave this summer, bringing his eight-year spell at Anfield to an end – a scenario that presents both a challenge and an opportunity for the club.
Salah’s form has dipped this term after reaching record-breaking levels earlier in the 2024–25 season. Given his substantial wages, a summer exit could ease Liverpool’s rebuild, while his post-match comments at Elland Road and a reported fallout with Arne Slot before AFCON have added to speculation.
Despite being under contract until June 2027, Salah has yet to hit his usual standards this season, although he now appears settled again on Merseyside.
Reports emerged on Tuesday claiming Al-Ittihad are in talks with Salah’s agent as they renew efforts to bring him to Saudi Arabia. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has since confirmed the club’s interest.
Al-Ittihad are viewed as frontrunners as they seek a new marquee signing following the departures of Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kante in the winter transfer window.
Romano said on his YouTube channel: Clubs from Saudi Arabia will be back for Mohamed Salah in the summer transfer window. They’re going to be back in conversations. Al-Ittihad could be one of them.
“Of course, they lose a superstar like Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kante. Obviously, not a striker, but still a superstar, still a world-class player in the final hours of the January transfer window.
“And they didn’t have time to replace them with absolute superstars, of course, with very good players, including also on Youssef En-Nesyri for sure from Fenerbahce, but they need probably a big name, and so Mohamed Salah could be a part of the conversation in the summer.
“I’m told that there could be more Saudi clubs attentive and keen on Mohamed Salah. Let’s see also from the MLS if some club decided to enter the conversation and sign Mohamed Salah from Liverpool.
“I think it’s going to be an interesting summer around the Egyptian winger. In general, at the end, nothing materialised in terms of official proposals or concrete possibilities.
“So Mohamed Salah ended up staying at Liverpool. But of course, in the summer, the story could be different. There is plenty of time. So let’s wait. There is an interest from Al-Ittihad. Not only Saudi clubs will be attentive as they’ve always been for Mohamed Salah.”
