General Manager Rob Pelinka is always under criticism in a high-stakes job with the Los Angeles Lakers to make his future a hot topic. A social media rumor circulated about the Lakers potentially firing Pelinka if this season ends poorly ahead of a significantly important offseason. Poor roster construction has led to many fans blaming Pelinka for the team’s lower ceiling. However, Lakers beat writer Jovan Buha revealed that the Lakers currently have full confidence in Pelinka doing his job effectively.
Buha shared the following on Twitter:
“Nothing has changed from what I’ve reported or said on my show. He’s (Pelinka) going to be leading their front-office overhaul this summer.”
The belief of Buha is that Pelinka will have the Lakers trust and will retain his role for the foreseeable future. LeBron James entering free agency this summer and more money coming off the books gives the Lakers a chance to rebuild their entire roster around new superstar Luka Doncic.
Fans hoping that Pelinka gets replaced by a new General Manager before the offseason will be disappointed by the news. However, it doesn’t take away from the facts of the Lakers being a premiere destination and having an ideal scenario for multiple stars wanting to team up with Doncic.
Offseason May Define Rob Pelinka’s Future
Teams like the Lakers have greater expectations and stronger pressure due to the incredible success they’ve achieved. Multiple dynasties with iconic players like Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Jerry West have made the fan base expect greatness.
General Managers typically have a shorter leash in situations like this, but Pelinka has held the spot for almost nine years now. Lakers fans losing patience in Pelinka will see this summer becoming the most important time of his tenure.
Pelinka deserves credit for being able to land LeBron and Anthony Davis to win the 2020 NBA Championship. Unfortunately, most of his moves since then have backfired until the Dallas Mavericks offered him Doncic for Davis. Failed moves this summer and a bad season next year could finally put him on the chopping block.
Pelinka’s Biggest Decision Involves LeBron James
The Lakers must figure out if LeBron is part of the future once his contract ends this season. James has not indicated that he plans to retire just yet, and most pundits expect him to play at least one more season before he finally ends his legendary career.
Pelinka might have to make the tough call of saying no to LeBron if the legend wants another big salary. The Lakers have too many weaknesses and need ideal players to work around Luka’s limitations. Austin Reaves is also expected to get a huge contract extension after his incredible improvement this year.
Regardless of what decisions he makes, the results will either give Pelinka a longer tenure with the franchise or finally put his job in jeopardy. The beat writer report confirmed Pelinka has the Lakers’ ownership trust heading into the offseason, but nothing was mentioned about his long-term future. Expectations are even higher now that the Lakers were essentially gifted a generational talent like Doncic.
