11th February 1939
On this day, Molineux, one of the iconic grounds in English football, witnessed its record attendance as 61,315 spectators gathered to watch Wolverhampton Wanderers, commonly known as Wolves, take on Liverpool in the Fifth Round of the FA Cup. Wolves emerged victorious with a 4-1 win over Liverpool. This attendance figure surpassed the previous record set against Arsenal in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup the previous year by a mere 48 fans. The current capacity of Molineux is just over half of those pre-war attendances. Following their triumph over Liverpool, Wolves advanced to the FA Cup final, where they faced a major upset, losing 4-1 to Portsmouth. This marked the conclusion of the last completed season before the outbreak of the Second World War, with Wolves finishing in second place in both the League and the FA Cup.
