Former NFL wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh said he would rather have Sam Darnold at quarterback than Jalen Hurts. The statement came during a heated Monday discussion on the Speakeasy podcast with former NFL cornerback Aqib Talib.
Houshmandzadeh stood by his position despite Talib’s pushback. The debate centered around which quarterback teams should want moving forward. Darnold just won Super Bowl LX with the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, defeating the New England Patriots 29-13.
Hurts won Super Bowl LIX MVP honors last year but struggled through an inconsistent 2025 campaign. The Philadelphia Eagles lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the Wild Card round.
Talib questioned how Darnold could rank above quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, and Hurts. Speakeasy shared the exchange on social media Tuesday morning, where the two former players argued their cases

Houshmandzadeh played 11 seasons in the NFL and caught 627 passes. Talib won a Super Bowl with Denver in 2015 and earned five Pro Bowl selections during his 12-year career.

Darnold’s Playoff Run Erased Doubts After Turnover-Heavy Regular Season
Darnold threw for 4,048 yards and 25 touchdowns in 2025, his first season in Seattle. He also committed 20 turnovers during the regular season, which led the league.
Those numbers flipped in the playoffs. Darnold went the entire postseason without a turnover, joining Drew Brees, Steve Young, and Troy Aikman as the only quarterbacks to win a Super Bowl with zero postseason giveaways across the last 35 years.
He completed 19 of 38 passes for 202 yards and one touchdown in Super Bowl LX. The 28-year-old quarterback also ran for five yards on two carries.
Darnold became the first quarterback to win a Super Bowl as a starter after playing for five different teams. His career path took him from the New York Jets to Carolina to San Francisco to Minnesota before landing in Seattle.

Hurts threw for 3,224 yards and 25 touchdowns in 2025 across 16 regular season games. He added six interceptions and 13 rushing touchdowns.
The Eagles went 11-6 and earned the sixth seed in the NFC. Philadelphia’s offense stalled in their playoff opener against the 49ers. Hurts completed 20 of 35 passes for 168 yards and one touchdown in the 23-19 loss.
Hurts won Super Bowl LIX MVP after throwing for 221 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 72 yards and another score. He became the third Black quarterback to earn Super Bowl MVP honors.
The 27-year-old quarterback has appeared in two Super Bowls during his sixth-year career. He lost Super Bowl LVII to Kansas City in 2023 before beating them two years later.
Hurts did not throw a passing touchdown from Week 14 through the Wild Card round. His streak of five consecutive games without a touchdown pass raised questions about Philadelphia’s offensive struggles.
Darnold’s career resurrection contrasts sharply with established quarterbacks who have sustained success over multiple seasons.
