Head coach Steve Kerr of the Golden State Warriors claps after a basket during the first half against the Phoenix Suns at Mortgage Matchup Center on February 05, 2026 in Phoenix, Arizona.
The Golden State Warriors reportedly plan to sign head coach Steve Kerr to a short-term extension once his contract expires at the end of the 2025-26 season, contrary to earlier reports suggesting Kerr may not return next year.
According to ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel, it’s highly unlikely that Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, both of whom have expiring contracts in 2026-27, will be playing for a coach other than Kerr next season.
“Steve Kerr’s future has been a talking point across the NBA, yet all signs point to him continuing on with Steph and Draymond. The Warriors will work out the details of a short-term deal if that is what Kerr would like,” Siegel reported on Feb. 10.
“All of the talk about the franchise not wanting him back is simply false, and there is nothing to suggest that Kerr’s coaching staff or the Warriors have been preparing for this to be his last season. The Dubs would like Kerr to continue coaching as long as he wants, and sources said the idea has always been for Kerr and Curry to retire together.”
Warriors: Last Dance in 2026-27?
The idea of Curry and Kerr retiring together definitely seems plausible, but there’s a realistic possibility that Draymond Green could be on another roster by next year. The defensive ace, who has a Player Option for 2026-27, was reportedly shopped ahead of the NBA trade deadline for Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. Some insiders also suggested that the Warriors were open to moving Green for other star-level players who could help Curry pursue a fifth NBA championship.
Many analysts believe the 2026-27 season, after which Curry, Green and Jimmy Butler III can become free agents, could be “the last dance” for the Kerr-led Warriors. While most league insiders expect Curry to sign a contract extension, ensuring he finishes his career as a Warrior, some have floated the idea of the iconic sharpshooter testing free agency if the franchise is unable to make significant roster upgrades.
Steve Kerr Contract Status
The topic of Kerr’s future recently became a hot-button issue after The Ringer’s Logan Murdock reported that the future Hall of Famer’s coaching staff is operating under the assumption that the 2025-26 season will be his final one with the Bay Area franchise.
“Though Kerr has publicly been mum about his future, multiple assistant coaches have been operating under the premise that he will not return next season, according to team sources, with some surveying the league to secure jobs next season,” Murdock reported, while analyzing the fallout of Jimmy Butler’s season-ending ACL tear.
Kerr, a nine-time NBA champion, signed a two-year, $35M deal with Golden State in 2024, making him the highest-paid head coach in history by average annual value. Last year, Kerr said he was taking a “year-to-year” approach to his coaching future with the Warriors and wasn’t sure when his stint would end.
“At this point, just year to year,” Kerr said. “I love my job. But I know where the team is. I know where the organization is. So I’m perfectly comfortable going year by year at this point.”
