Opinion: Chelsea definitely would have avoided Leeds collapse if they completed £20m deal in January

Liam Rosenior would have learnt a lot about his Chelsea team following Tuesday night’s game against Leeds United.

Scoring goals is not a problem for the Blues. They netted twice in their 2-2 draw with Daniel Farke’s men and could have had another one if Cole Palmer converted his chance in stoppage time.

On the other hand, Chelsea are not as convincing when it comes to defending, while their management of games can also be questioned.

What is Chelsea’s biggest weakness? 😟

BlueCo's transfer strategy continues to hamper Chelsea.

Rosenior is finding that out the hard way, but it is something that the club’s sporting directors should have already been aware of and addressed during the January transfer window.

Leeds’ collapse proof Chelsea need a reliable defender like Marc Guehi

The moment the ball found its way into Robert Sanchez’s box just prior to Leeds’ equaliser, Chelsea were crying out for a central defender like Marc Guehi.

The point that keeps being made about this Chelsea squad is that it is too young and inexperienced, and supporters saw that on Tuesday.

Young Josh Acheampong had a chance to clear the ball but did not. Instead, he tried to guard it for Sanchez to come and collect.

However, that did not work and Noah Okafor was eventually able to capitalise on the mix up and draw Leeds level.

Arsenal legend Paul Merson was quick to point the finger at Acheampong, who does not deserve all of the blame for Chelsea’s collapse. After all, it was Moises Caicedo’s reckless tackle that allowed Leeds back into the game, while Palmer missed that glorious opportunity.

Had a more mature defender like Guehi been in Acheampong’s position, though, they would have cleared their lines. Just having a more experienced head at the back probably would have helped Chelsea to see out the match and remain calm after letting the first goal in.

Guehi only cost Manchester City £20m in January. At some stage, Chelsea are going to regret not pushing for his signature, especially if they fail to sign a proven and reliable centre-half in the near future.

Chelsea should consider Murillo and Marcos Senesi moves this summer

Guehi may no longer be available, but there are other names out there, including Nottingham Forest’s Murillo and Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi.

The Marc Guehi ship has sailed… Any experienced alternatives that come to mind ahead of this summer?

Antonio Rudiger? Ibrahima Konate? Marcos Senesi? 👀

Murillo is only 23, yet the Brazilian is one of the top centre-backs in the Premier League and has made 86 appearances in the competition. He is by no means a novice.

It is thought that Murillo is open to a move to Chelsea this summer.

At 28, Senesi is even more experienced than Murillo and could cost nothing as his contract continues to run down. In January, it was reported that Chelsea did consider Senesi while the transfer market was open.

All in all, the club have to look at bringing in a seasoned centre-half ahead of the 2026/27 season, and Murillo and Senesi are good candidates.
